The Language Flagship
The Language Flagship is a national effort to change the way Americans learn languages. Flagship offers language programs at schools across the United States for undergraduate students in critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian. Designed as a network of programs, The Language Flagship seeks to graduate students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a professional level of proficiency in a language critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness.
The Language Flagship makes the goal of reaching a professional level of proficiency in another language an achievable goal for students of all skills, areas of study, and backgrounds. The Chinese Language Flagship Program at ASU offers a dynamic undergraduate program for highly motivated students seeking to achieve a professional level of Chinese proficiency while simultaneously pursuing a major of their choice. Our program attracts students who are among the best learners of Chinese in the nation.
Domestic Curriculum at ASU
The ASU Chinese Language Flagship Program offers a language curriculum from the beginning to the advanced levels. Students also complete Chinese content courses in a wide range of disciplines, including history, literature, religions, economics, and cultures. Students further develop their Chinese language and cultural skills through one-on-one tutoring in all modalities, domain-based language training, and a variety of program activities such as language labs, book clubs, movie nights, and a wide variety of cultural events.
Summer Study and Capstone-year Study
To support students in developing their Chinese proficiency, they are provided opportunities to participate in intensive domestic or overseas summer Chinese study programs that cover the equivalent of two semesters of college Chinese language study within one summer.
During the Capstone Year in Taiwan, students complete advanced Chinese language study and take direct-enrollment courses at the host university and conduct one semester of professional internship in Chinese to gain experience in their chosen field.
Students have access to The Language Flagship Scholarship to support intensive domestic or overseas summer language study. Students may apply for The Boren Scholarship to support Capstone-year study in Taiwan. Contracted ROTC cadets are eligible for fully funded summer and Capstone-year study opportunities.
