In Vietnam, there are 54 ethnics with Kinh ethinic is the majority. Kinh’s specific cultural features, with the ability to interfere and harmonize with the cultural characteristics of other ethnic groups, can be considered as Vietnamese culture’s representative. Among those elements that create a culture like costume, music, literature, architect, and cuisine, we can see cuisine as a factor that changes to adjust with the changing of natural and social environments through time. However, right from the beginning, the elements of natural’s evironment are always the factors which represent the spirit: ‘immutable, responsive to all changes’ of Kinh ethnics to their living environment. Let’s discuss about Kinh’s meals, eating habits, and dishes to see their mindfulness with the spirit: ‘it’s no use preaching to a hungry man’ and at the same time, we can see the habit of highly respected honor via an idiom: ‘a polite greeting is better than a good meal’.

Ha Vo is a PhD linguist and lecturer from the Linguistic Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities Hanoi, a branch of Vietnam National University. She was a visiting lecturer of Vietnamese language and culture in the Univeristy of Guangxi Nationalities (China), Univeristy of Ubon Ratchanthani (Thailand), and Guangxi University (China).
