Biography

A Spanish major since junior high school in East Los Angeles, Manuel de Jes�s Hern�ndez-G.  attended the University of California at San Diego, where he received a bachelor's in Spanish, and Stanford University, where he received a doctorate with a dissertation on the Chicano/a novel. Since then, Hern�ndez-G. has worked as a lecturer at Stanford University and the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC); as an assistant professor at Washington State University (WSU) and DePaul University; and as a tenured professor at Arizona State University (ASU). At ASU, he has served in and directed the track Chicano studies in Spanish, maintaining the Chicano/a curricula and helping hire new faculty in the field. Hern�ndez-G. has lectured on Chicano/a and U.S. Latino/a literature and culture in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, and Venezuela. He has published five books, directed 12 dissertations and 21 master's theses on Chican@x and U.S. Latin@x literature and culture. His former doctorates work in Arizona, New Mexico, California, and M�xico, and they have published books and refereed articles. In 2004 in Bogot�, Colombia, Hern�ndez-G. received an International Award for his teaching and scholarship along with Orlando Fals Borda and Peter Horwath. Hern�ndez-G.s most recent published scholarly article is Literatura chicana, 2000-2016, como una consciente marcha adelante plurivocal: de la afirmaci�n literaria de los 1960 a una second wave o nueva generaci�n chicana (2017). Lastly, he is currently writing a book on the literary and cultural production of five Mexican Immigration Waves, which began in the 1910s.  

As a student in Los Angeles City College (LACC) and a member of United Mexican American Students (UMAS), Hern�ndez-G. attended the 1969 Denver Youth Conference organized by the renowned Chicano poet Rodolfo Corky Gonzalez where the former was inspired to collect and read Chican@x literature. Additionally, at the youth conference he voted to change the name of several student organizations to Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztl�n (MEChA) and was a member until 1984. From the early 1980s, he joined the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies, and eventually served as national xoordinator in the AY 1996-97. He is also a long time member of the Modern Language Association and has served in the Red Internacional de Investigadores en Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades (RIICSH) since 1997. As president of RIICSH, he organized and hosted its 2014 international conference at Arizona State University (ASU)the largest scholarly conference in the Spanish language ever held at ASU.
