Biography

Dr. Koji Tanno is originally from Saitama, Japan. He enjoys swimming and hiking and loves going to national parks in the Southwest.  Learning foreign languages has been his life-time passion, and currently he speaks English and Mandarin Chinese as his second languages.

He has been teaching Japanese as a foreign language to students of various levels for many years.  Previously, he taught at Lewis and Clark College, Eastern Michigan University, and Middlebury Summer Language School.

He is interested in various aspects of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and second language acquisition.  His research currently focuses on discourse markers and their grammaticalization process, in particular, how contemporary functions of Japanese discourse markers emerged in dialogical contexts of conversation.

Education

Koji Tanno received his Ph.D from the University of Washington. 

Research Interests

Japanese sociolinguistics, pragmatics, second language acquisition, narrative study, gramamticalization, pedagogy
