As the largest moderate Muslim country in the world, Indonesia consists of hundreds of ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture and traditions, but everyone speaks the national language: Indonesian. Because of this, our students choose to pair their Indonesian courses with other majors such as:
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and the largest Southeast Asian country. With the major islands of Java, Bali, and Sumatra, and major parts of Borneo and New Guinea, Indonesia has vast natural and human resources fertile for investments and business opportunities making the ability to speak Indonesian important to prospective employers.

Many of these are US government careers because they classify Indonesian as a "critical langauge" meaning they are always in need of good employees who speak Indonesian. Because of this, the US government provides many opportunites (usually in scholarship form) to study abroad. Here, at SILC, we prepare and help our students to obtain full scholarship for study abroad programs, and the majority of ASU students applying for these programs were accepted. The SILC Attaches Club is a club that brings all languages and cultures from SILC together. People are able to learn about different cultures in a fun way when studying a language. Understanding different cultures is such an important attribute to have, and it is one you can obtain through SILC Attaches. This club creates community events, outreach projects, and plans fun get-togethers.
Bali, Indonesia CLI's summer program in Bali helps students extend and solidify the communicative and cultural skills they develop during intensive classes on the ASU campus.The program provides 3 hours a day of classroom instruction, during which students review the material covered in Arizona, with an emphasis on listening and speaking skills. In the afternoon and on weekends, the program offers excursions and extra-curricular activities led by local activity guides. ROTC students receive full scholarship.
United States Indonesia Society For more than 20 years now, USINDO with the generous support of the Freeman Foundation has held the USINDO Summer Studies Program. This is an intensive ten-week language and cultural studies program held from May to August, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is open to U.S. university juniors or seniors, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, as well as recent graduates (within 6 months) of any U.S. college or university. Participants are selected in a competitive application process.
Arizona State University's Critical Languages Institute is a national training institute for less commonly taught languages, offering summer intensive courses and study-abroad programs around the world. CLI instruction in Arizona and abroad is practically focused and proficiency-based. Students not only study a language, but learn to live that language.

In the Study Abroad Office, Shira Burns (shira.burns@asu.edu) oversees applications to programs. Study Abroad’s deadlines for applying for all programs are September 25th for the spring and February 15th for the fall. ASU financial aid is accepted for all programs on Study Abroad’s approved list.
Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian –COTI (Salatiga, Indonesia). ASU is a COTI member intermediate and advanced students are eligible to receive full scholarship. It Currently coordinated by UCLA.
