Students must have taken 4 semesters of college-level Spanish. This program is open to non-ASU students and non-degree seeking students.

Program Housing

Participants will reside individually with local families in which three meals each day, seven days a week and laundry are included (during the weekend in Barcelona' students will share rooms in a hotel/residence with breakfast included). This housing experience provides the opportunity to speak Spanish and allows students to be immersed in the culture. Classrooms are within walking distance of the program housing.

Location Details

During the four-week program, students experience the historical Spanish city ofLeón. Founded by the Romans and later a kingdom in the medieval ages, today León is a city of 140,000 people with innovative and international institutions dedicated to culture and science. León is situated in Castile along the centuries-old Way of Saint James pilgrimage route, and combines a long history and rich traditions with forward-looking modernity. The program combines classes with the opportunity to visit cultural sites The time spent in the city of León includes several field trips to cultural sites that attract tourists from around the world, including a visit to a Templar Castle, and to Las Médulas, the most important gold mine in the Roman Empire, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. León is a university town with student ambiance for young people.

During the program, students also spend a weekend in Barcelona discovering architecture, painting, and cultural achievements by figures such as Gaudi and Picasso, as well as enjoying world-class Spanish cuisine. The program may also allow for time to be spent in non-program activities for students to travel on their own and to explore the surroundings and to engage in various outdoor activities. Well situated, León is 90 minutes from the beach, 2 hours from Salamanca, and less than 3 hours away from Madrid.

The Program Fee for Summer 2017 is TBD. The summer 2016 program fee was: $4,980 and the summer 2017 fee is likely to be close to this.

The program includes: ASU tuition for 6 credits, all accommodations, field trips and excursions, four day trip to Barcelona, most meals, and international health insurance. Not included: ASU student fees, airfare to/from Spain, transportation to/from the airport, passport and visa fees, incidentals, additional meals, passports, books, personal expenses and miscellaneous items.

Faculty Directed program participants are also responsible for paying a non-refundable $50 Application Fee, in addition to the Program Fee listed above. All other costs associated with participation in the program are the responsibility of the individual student. Be sure to reference the program cost sheet for information on program fees and any additional estimated expenses.

The program may allow for time which can be spent in non-program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sight-see or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
