Certificate in Classical Studies

Students admitted to a degree program in any field are eligible for the Classical Studies Certificate Program.

Requirements

Students are responsible for fulfilling the following minimum requirements to earn the classical studies certificate:

  1. One semester of advanced language (in either ancient Greek or Latin).
  2. Two semesters of course work in classical studies (200-300 level).
  3. Two semesters of course work in classical studies (300+ level).
  4. Students must maintain a 2.00 or higher GPA in all course work.

1. Ancient Language Requirement

  • Students must reach an advanced level in either ancient Greek or Latin.
  • For ancient Greek: students must take GRK 101, 201, 301 and 302 (or equivalent) and then repeat GRK 301 or 302 (which may be repeated for credit).
  • For Latin: students must take LAT 101, 102, 201 and 202 (or equivalent) and then take LAT 421 or 422 (which may be repeated for credit).
  • Combining languages cannot complete this requirement (e.g., three semesters of ancient Greek and two semesters of Latin).

2. Course Work in Classical Studies (200-300 level)

Approved courses include the following:

ARS 404 Greek Art
ARS 406 Roman Art
ARS Special Topics Courses
ASB 222 Buried Cities and Lost Tribes
ENG 303 Classical Backgrounds of English Literature
HST 347 Ancient Greece
HST 348 Rome
LAT/ENG 494/598 Latin Paleography
HPS 322 History of Science
GRK/LAT 294 Classical Mythology
GRK/LAT Special Topics Courses
PHI 301 History of Ancient Philosophy
POS 340 History of Political Philosophy

Additional courses may be approved by the directors of the certificate program.

3. Course Work in Classical Studies (300+ level)

  • Students may choose 300+ level classes from list of courses above.
  • Students may use additional language courses at or above the 300 level to meet this requirement.
  • Additional courses may be approved by the directors.
  • Courses submitted for approval must be primarily about Classical Studies.
  • Students must submit detailed syllabi and a specific list of assignments (author, title and number of pages assigned for each class, length of papers, specific course activities, etc.) for courses submitted for approval.
  • Courses submitted for approval must be taught by an instructor with an advanced degree in Classics or a related field.

4. Admissions Procedures

Applications should be submitted by e-mail to Almira Poudrier.
The application will consist of:

  1. Name.
  2. Address.
  3. Phone number.
  4. E-mail address (Note: Must be an ASU e-mail address).
  5. Student ID number.
  6. Major or intended major.
  7. College/year.
  8. Emphasis (Greek or Latin).
  9. Anticipated graduation date.
  10. Advisor.
