Fellowships and Awards
España Award: To be given to the best M.A. student with concentration in Spanish Peninsular literature.
Portuguese Award: The award will be presented annually to a doctoral student enrolled as a regular student in Portuguese-language courses. Selection will be made by the Portuguese faculty.
M.A. in Latin American Literature Award: The award will be made to the best M.A. thesis on a topic in Latin American literature defended during the twelve calendar months prior to the month of the award. Selection will be made by an ad hoc committee of the Spanish Doctoral Committee.
Latin American Publishing Award: The award will be made to the best scholarly article published by a doctoral student during the twelve calendar months prior to the month of the award. Selection will be made by an ad hoc committee of the Spanish Doctoral Committee. The article chosen must have been published in a refereed journal such as those recognized by the "Master List" of the MLA's International Bibliography.
Mexican American / Northern Mexican Publication Award: This award highlights the best scholarly article published in Mexican American literature and culture by an M.A. or doctoral student in specializing or sub-specializing in Mexican American Studies. The award will be made to the best scholarly article published during the twelve calendar months prior to the month of the award.
Teaching Award: The award will be made to the best Teaching Assistant or Associate in good academic standing for the period of at least three consecutive semesters prior to the semester of the award. Selection will be made by an ad hoc committee of the Spanish Doctoral Committee.
Spanish Linguistics Award: This award is given to the most outstanding Spanish M.A. student with a concentration in linguistics. Criteria for selection include: progress in the M.A. program and toward professional goals, quality of performance in linguistics classes, GPA, and professional activities (presentations / publications). Candidates for the award must be in at least their fourth semester in the M.A. program; preference will be given to qualified candidates who are working on their theses.
Gail Guntermann Award for Excellence in Teaching: This award is offered, on a competitive basis, to the teaching assistant who designs teaching/assessment materials that will contribute to the improvement of instruction/assessment in the lower division Spanish courses.
David Raúl Foster Award: for best research publication by a doctoral student in Latin American literature and culture.
Doctoral Enrichment Fellowships: Supports new and regularly admitted first-year graduate students who are underrepresented in their field of study. Student must be nominated for this fellowship by their admitting academic unit.
Foster Latin American Research Fellowship: Summer stipends/travel support for graduate students engaged in Latin American studies.
Reach for the Stars Fellowships: Supports new and regularly admitted first-year graduate students who are Arizona residents and underrepresented in their field of study. Students must be nominated by the admitting academic unit.
Spanish Graduate Fellowship Award (SGFA): Recognizes an outstanding Ph.D. applicant in Spanish.
